Making Money Living on The Road

There are many ways of making money while traveling. We found out just how good remote working can be when the pandemic hit and many folks were required to work from home. Indeed, when the pandemic waned, it was hard to get people back to the office.

There are Several Categories of Remote Work

  1. Numbers: Bookkeeping, making websites, medical coding.
  2. Writing: Must be a good speller and know grammar.
  3. Artistic: Not everyone has artistic abilities. I don’t, but you might!
  4. Handyman or Tasks oriented: RV repair, work camping, campground host.

Accounting with Quickbooks

Quickbooks
Every money-making venture in the world depends, either in part or completely, on good accounting. Your job may not involve any number crunching, and you really like it that way! But believe me, whoever is making money off of your efforts understands bookkeeping. Whoever is in a position to offer you a job, or a mortgage, also understands bookkeeping. Knowledge is power, and knowing how money works is one of the number one factors to becoming successful.

We’ve used Quickbooks software to keep track of our finances and pay the bills. Quickbooks advertising can make it sound like it’s so easy you don’t need to know accounting, but software is just a tool. Every tool needs some understanding to operate properly. Mastering the basics of accounting will not only give you greater control of your own financial situation; it can open the door to sharing your knowledge and making some money.

My wife took a basic, one-term accounting class at the local community college. Over the next twenty-five years she launched a successful bookkeeping business, serving clients who ranged from individuals to small businesses, then bigger businesses, as well as our own electronics company. She also took online classes to stay current in her field, but learning the basics of accounting allowed her to make a self-employed living.

3. Jobs that Require Artistic Abilities

Graphic Design
Website Design and Building

Sell handmade products through stores like ETSY.

Flea Market Flipping

If you have particular area of knowledge, you might be able to find unknown treasures at flea markets and yard sales, then turn around and sell them on eBay® for a substantial markup. My area of knowledge is vintage electronics. I can find some good deals at yard sales or estate sales when the sellers do not know the value of what they are selling. I had a following on eBay who watched for my finds.

Flea Market Flair

Lisa Marie Hart uses a vintage camper trailer and a converted VW bus to create a Flea Market favorite.

Making money

She has a website that lists the flea markets she’ll be attending and has a large following.

I was poking around Pinterest and found many such setups. I have also thought about doing the flea market circuit after I saw one guy making neat salt and pepper shakers that looked like picnic tables and Adirondack chairs.  He had his tools and supplies in a trailer pulled behind his RV. Making the products while exhibiting at the flea markets was always a popular draw.

4. Task Oriented Businesses

If you are more inclined to fulfill tasks for others you could find work:

  • Being a campground host
  • Work camping
  • Harvesting or farm labor
  • Become a mobile RV mechanic
  • Run errands with TaskRabbit
  • Look for gigs on Craigslist
