Best RV and Tiny House Mattresses
We humans spend nearly a third of our lives in bed, so our mattress quality is important. But where do you get a quality mattress for an RV or unique tiny house bedroom? Space constraints and odd furniture configurations can make it difficult to find the right size mattress and bedding. The effects of condensation must also be considered in our choices.
We’ve found two companies that make custom-sized mattresses expressly for the RV and tiny house crowd. Both manufacturers use high-density, open-cell foam to be long lasting and super comfortable.
Coupled with the right bedding, these mattresses will give you a comfortable, sound sleep.
RVs and Tiny Houses Have Some Unique Requirements in Mattresses and Bedding
Custom size RV and tiny house mattresses
Buying a mattress for your tiny home or RV can be a bit more challenging than simply buying a stock mattress.
RV manufacturers just had to make their mattresses specific sizes, generally a little smaller, than your basic home mattress. In addition, many RVs and travel trailers have now designed their mattresses to have rounded edges, allowing greater access around the bed. It creates more space, but really makes it hard to find sheets!
Tiny house builders design their homes from the ground up. Many spaces, like the living room, need furniture that is “re-configurable.” The couch cushions frequently need to double as a bed mattress.
Skoolies and RVs frequently have miniature bunk beds in alcoves along the hallway. They might need to be long and narrow, but there’s no reason they can’t be comfortable.
Mattress Insider Specializes in RV and Tiny Home Mattresses
Pictured on the right is the Elation Gel-Foam RV Mattress with their Organic Cotton Cover. Experience the incredibly comfortable and supportive coil-free latex RV mattress! The highly elastic qualities of their latex provide extra support for you and your sleeping partner, preventing you from sinking into the mattress. RV latex mattresses also have a long lifespan, with some people reporting they retain their original feel for 20 years or more.
Mattress Insider uses a blended latex, which combines natural latex and synthetic latex materials. Blended latex is more durable than natural latex, it cost less, and it contains fewer chemicals than its synthetic counterparts. The natural latex part of the formulation is sourced from rubber trees found in the rainforests of Brazil and Sri Lanka.
RV mattresses made of latex have been proven in several studies to better relieve pressure points when compared to traditional coil spring and memory foam mattresses. Eliminate tossing and turning, and finally get a good night’s sleep.
Latex provides durability for RV and tiny house mattresses
Latex tends to last much longer than materials like memory foam and high density foam. This is crucial for RV living because of the high stress temperatures inside RVs. Some people will store their RVs in the cold all winter, reaching freezing temperatures. Then those same folks might leave their RV in 100°F weather for months at a time. Your mattress must be able to handle these temperature swings well, for years at a time, and not sacrifice quality. Latex mattresses will be best suited for these wild temperature swings, and keep your mattress in great condition for years to come!

Latex Foam Compared to Memory Foam
Memory foam is usually made of a synthetic type of high-density polyurethane foam. It can off-gas hazardous chemicals. Some have a certain percentage of their synthetic fibers replaced by greener products like soybean oil. Latex foam is 100% organic plant fibers. Latex does not off-gas hazardous chemicals.
Memory foam alone would be too soft. It’s usually mixed with other types of foam to obtain a desired firmness. Memory foam is said to “sleep hot” because there is little air movement. Latex foam sleeps cooler by allowing more airflow, moving moisture and heat away from the sleeper.
Memory foam is short-lived in RV environments, usually 2 to 5 years. Latex will last 10 years or more.

Avoiding Moisture Issues Under Your RV and Tiny House Mattresses
Because RVs and tiny homes are small, tightly-sealed boxes, moisture builds up quickly. Lift up any mattress that lies on a sheet of plywood and you’ll see black mold, a serious health hazard.
Air circulation, especially under the mattress, is critically important
This anti-condensation underlay by Tochta will cause air to flow under the mattress, moving the moisture out with it. It is an essential piece of RV and tiny house bedding.
HyPUR-Flo Anti-Condesation Underlay (shown here) is designed to prevent moisture build-up underneath your mattress. It will elevate your mattress about 1/2 inch to create unobstructed air flow which will help prevent condensation & moisture, keep the bottom of your mattress dry, while allowing any potential moisture to evaporate. Custom made to any size and/or shape that you need.
Tip: Do not make your bed immediately in the morning. Give your bedding time to evaporate the moisture before covering it up. If your mattress touches a wall, make sure the anti-condensation underlay is large enough to go under the mattress and extend up the wall so you have air flow there too. Run a small fan to move the moisture laden air away from the bed.
Organic Shredded Latex Pillow
The 2-in-1 Organic Shredded Latex Pillow from Naturepedic will keep you comfortable all night long. The pillow combines comfort, sustainability, and safety with an innovative design and high-quality materials. It offers two distinct feelings: one side with a quilted, cloud-like feel with dual-action compression of PLA fiber and latex, and the other side with smooth organic cotton that conforms to your head. Made from organic cotton and organic latex, it stays cool and breathable during the night, and provides excellent head and neck support. Plus, the outer layer is washable – so you can clean and keep this pillow for years!
What is Organic Latex?
My first thought was, “How can a synthetic fiber be ‘organic?'” Turns out natural latex comes from the milky sap harvested from the rubber tree, not petroleum. Organic is a guaranteed seal of environmental approval so you can be sure that your mattress is free of man-made products and chemicals.
Naturepedic also has an Organic Cotton Pillow that will keep you and your family breathing healthy all night long. The pillow combines comfort, sustainability, and safety with an innovative design and high-quality materials. Comprised of a super-soft 300 count
