Prefab Tiny Home from The Home Depot
More than ever people are desperately searching for reasonably priced living situations. Ordering a prefab tiny home from The Home Depot as a kit might be a way to save construction costs depending on your ability to be the builder and contractor.
House kits can be more affordable because:
- You get a bulk price for buying everything at once.
- You won’t need to hire an architect.
- Many come with plans ready to take to your counties permit department.
- Just imagine the time you’ll save running to the lumber store.
Buying a home from a catalog is a proven home source
Buying a home from a catalog is not new. Sears has been doing it for years. In this Sears Catalog from 1926 there are 86 homes to choose from. In addition to visual documentation, the catalog provides extensive, detailed construction information, ranging from the grade of exterior siding to the type of wood used for flooring, windows, and trim.
In 2018, the company filed for bankruptcy after years of declining sales.
The Home Depot Steps in, Offering Over 300 Home Kits and Sheds
There are companies that sell pre-made modular homes. I did not see any of those available from The Home Depot. They do, however, sell Tuff Sheds. These sheds look like tiny houses and the price is inviting. But there are many obstacles that need to be overcome before you’d be allowed to live in one. Visit my page, Converting A Shed Into A Tiny House for the details.
The Home Depot does not sell a THOW (Tiny House On Wheels) kit.
The Home Depot sells many other home kits like this one from HUD-1.
The ad says: “Multi room Log cabin kit is an excellent design to provide a large amount of open space, and also includes two 9 ft. x 6 ft. 3 in. rooms and a 19 ft. x 6 ft. bunk to area. This building offers 456 sq. ft. of total interior space. The building includes a half-wraparound front terrace which offers over 300 sq. ft. of relaxing space. This building is an easy, quick assembly project for the D.I.Y. that needs some extra space to set up an office or some additional space for an over crowded home. The building is shipped direct to you via curbside. Roofing shingles are sold separately.”
Again, always read the ad carefully and do not assume anything. The ad does say it does not include shingles and you’ll need to create your own foundation. I can’t tell what the walls are made of from the artist renderings (the images are not actual photos). It is sold for the purpose of “great for storage your gardening items workshop or hobby items” so they don’t have to meet any building codes. The company name, HUD-1, is slightly deceptive in that this building has nothing to do with the HUD government agency. This kit sells for $33,089.00*. Click image for more details.
The Home Depot Sells Steel-Frame Building Kits
The structure shown at the top of the page is listed as Bangalow Ultimate 837 sq. ft. 2 Bedroom with Loft Tiny Home DIY Steel Frame Building Kit.
The ad says: “The steel-frame structure is highly adaptable, durable, and strong. Spaces have been allocated to pave the way for creativity and customization. A separate kitchen and dining area can be made possible through the installation of an island or dining room table. The two bedrooms with attached bathrooms are placed on opposite sides of the home, each having provision for its own closet. One bathroom features extra space for your laundry and additional storage. Designed to be constructed on a concrete slab foundation.”
The base price is $4300.00*. Upgrades include adding a floor, increasing the size, and increasing the strength.
These prefab tiny home kits from The Home Depot actually meet building codes
PLuS 1 home kits are architecturally designed and approved by a professional engineer to comply with your location’s building codes and zoning requirements. As an extra bonus, all their steel-frame kits can be engineered to withstand harsh climates, including the ones affected by snow, cyclones, and hurricanes. “If you require the stamped certificate by a professional engineer, and want to purchase the architectural structural plans and calculations that meet your location’s building codes, please contact us.”
2 Bedroom Tiny Home DIY Steel-Frame Building Kit
This bungalow is 1298 sq.ft. and sells for $61,590.00*. Not exactly a tiny house but I mention it to show the broad range of DIY home kits available.
What The Home Depot carries changes frequently. This model is no longer available. Click on image to see a similar offering on The Home Depot website. Notice it’s just the metal frame.
Quonset Huts are also steel building kits
These have a unique look and some unique issues that need to be overcome to become a tiny home. To see more about those visit this page: Quonset Huts.
The Home Depot Offers Financing
The Home Depot offers financing in the form of a credit card from CitiBank. With good credit you can get up to 10 years to pay at credit card interest rates close to 20%*.
The fine print made me dizzy looking at it but here’s the link.
Here’s an interesting YouTube® video comparing shed companies to see which is best constructed and could be converted to a tiny house:
