Outdoor Cooking Books and Resources

When we first started camping together, my wife used to say that cooking outdoors was just like cooking in her own kitchen, but a lot more work. Over time, we tackled the charcoal/wood/propane dilemma, as well as Dutch oven versus cast-iron skillet, grates and grills, recipes and roasting and wrapping things in foil. Now she rocks the ribs, the chicken, and the steak, and I bake the breads and desserts.

There are several methods of outdoor cooking. All deliver scrumptious meals. Outdoor cooking can be made easier and better by learning certain methods, tips, and tricks to get the best results.

I’ve made some surprisingly great meals and desserts with my simple cast-iron cooking setup.

Making use of outdoor space expands your tiny house. Cooking outside is a little different than inside, but it’s more adventurous, more festive, and can be lot of fun! I baked a butterscotch cake in my Dutch oven and we had a hard time leaving it alone.

Cast iron and Dutch oven cooking does require some essential tools. See them here.

Outdoor Kitchens

In tiny house living, an outdoor kitchen doesn’t need to be elaborate or expensive to be functional and fun. It might be just a propane BBQ grill. You could expand it to include a prep station, possibly a sink. I also recommend a non-flammable patio. Do what your budget allows. Build as you go.

Extending your living space to the out-of-doors gives you added breathing room. Cooking outside keeps the smells and moisture out of the tiny home and makes cleanup a breeze.
