Sofas, Recliners, and Chairs for RVs, Travel Trailers, and Tiny Houses
Here are some great sofas, recliners, and chairs for RVs, travel trailers, and tiny homes. Comfort is very important, but the tiny lifestyle also presents some unique challenges in selecting our furnishings. In my search I’ve kept these considerations in mind, as well as product durability, quality, and the ability to fit through those small RV doors.
When it comes to purchasing furniture for your tiny abode, taking measurements beforehand is a critical concern
Measure the space the piece will occupy. Measure the doorways and hallways you’ll have to move it through. Think of the people who will be relaxing in these recliners, or sleeping in the beds, and compare their measurements to the dimensions listed in the ads. Returning furniture can sometimes be accomplished, but who in their right mind would do it if they don’t have to?
RV and tiny house furniture needs particular attributes to work well and last:
- Your furniture needs to fit through your door. RVs especially can have very narrow doors. Tiny homes can have sharp bends.
- The furniture frame must survive the shaking and bumps of the road without the joints loosening up.
- With limited space, tiny house and RV furniture needs to have multiple functions. Do you want to be able to transform a sofa to a bed?
- Your front seats may need to swivel and become the driver’s seat with seat belts.
- Recliners need to stay tight against the wall for maximum walking space, but still recline without needing to be pulled out from the wall.
Living room comfort is one of the most neglected aspects of tiny house design.
Recliners for Tiny Spaces
Recliners are my favorite chairs. However, it can be inexplicably hard to find one that will work for an RV or tiny home.
Most recliners are electrically-powered, but that may not be a good choice for for an RV or off-grid tiny home. You really don’t want to fire up the generator each time you get in and out of your chair.
So my pick is this model from Amazon.com. It’s real leather, so it will last a long time. You only need to keep it about two inches from the wall and still be able to recline the full distance. Click on the photo for more information.
It disassembles to fit through a 23″ door. The metal frame can be bolted to the floor so it doesn’t move while you’re in motion. It sells for $549.00*, but click on the link and read the entire ad carefully.
Some people found this recliner to be too small for them. It’s possible to return it, but you need to pay the shipping fee both ways.
RecPro Charles 30″ RV Wall-Hugger Recliner RV Zero Wall Chair
My wife is crazy about this style because it’s very firm with excellent back support.
While comfort is one of the most important aspects of an enjoyable road trip in your recreational vehicle, an aesthetic appeal will also add to your enjoyment. The right furniture can do wonders for enhancing your space, despite its smaller size. This is even more important if you are living in your RV, travel trailer, or tiny home for an extended period of time. Not only should furniture blend in with your decor, but also function well in the most space-efficient way possible. RecPro provides products that blend these features at the best value.

Sectional Sofa with Sleeper and Storage
This convertible sofa/bed is super popular because not only is it very comfortable, it offers great storage as well! The mattress pulls out from underneath the seat, so you don’t have those uncomfortable bars crossing your back at night. Even so, you might want a mattress topper to even out the joints.
Sometimes clean lines and simplicity are beautiful to behold. That’s the case with this Hiltons sectional sofa. It’s contemporary, yet warm and inviting. Upholstered in black linen and filled with full-foam cushions, it provides ultra-comfort while being stylish. Furthermore, its pull-out sleeper provides even more functionality.
The foam seats are pretty firm, and the back pillows are softer for gentle back support. It makes a great sofa and a bed. Very well designed.
It measures 30″ deep, wide, 35″ high, and 52″ wide. It’s 83″ long when fully extended. Weighs 166 lbs. Available from Amazon.

Jackknife Sofas
Jackknife sofas convert to sleeping space if needed. They also have storage space underneath. Their metal frame is strong and can be bolted to the floor. You can order them with or without the sides as needed.
The 60″ wide model I have in my camper is just too short for a six foot tall person and (after 30 years) the foam pads have lost their support. It would be great to replace it with one of the wider jackknife sofas available from RecPro.
Updating to the coziness of cloth takes this product to a new level of completeness. The versatility of changing from couch to bed quickly, combined with the soft breathable fabric, could be the “aha!” product you are looking for. No longer do you have to struggle to store some extra sleeping bags or air mattresses for when guests come over. Just convert this couch to a bed and settle in for a great night’s sleep.

DIY Slatted Sofa/Bed
Here’s a good YouTube video showing construction of the ubiquitous slatted, pull-out sofa/bed you can make to your specific size. Even though it’s being built for a van, it show the construction (including drawers for storage). Also, note the spaces between the slats. These allow for airflow under the mattress to avoid condensation buildup and mold.
