Tiny House Kitchen Appliances
Tiny house appliances will be one of the biggest investments you make as you build your home. Not only might they be the largest user of space, power, and gross vehicle weight, but their functionality involves every system in your build. Consider your lifestyle as well as the physical layout as you choose tiny house kitchen appliances. As with all aspects of tiny living, proper planning is the key to success!
Make Sure Your Selection Criteria Reflects Your Actual Life
Have you seen the participants on a tiny house show turn up their noses at a tiny oven saying, “You can’t cook a turkey for Thanksgiving in that tiny thing”? Well, that’s probably true. Tiny living requires some adjustments. My wife says she can’t imagine cooking and carving up a whole turkey in a tiny house, but we are fortunate to live in a world with many possibilities. She usually cooks a turkey roast, and we ask our guests to bring the sides. Many supermarkets sell these items hot and ready to go. Yes, tiny life requires sacrifice. But for us, the rewards have been worth it. We live well within our means, in a house we can easily care for. Read on to find appliances that will fit your space and your budget.
Speaking of possibilities, you can still cook an entire turkey with this outdoor Backyard Pro 30 Qt. Deluxe Aluminum Turkey Fryer Kit/Steamer Kit. Just be careful to cook well away from the house on a non-flammable patio, not a wooden deck. Extend your kitchen with outdoor cooking.
Fight to save every inch, every pound, and every watt of power
Consider the utilities you will have available on your property when deciding on the type of appliances you will use. If you will be on solar power, you will need keep your electricity for things like computers and lighting and ventilation, while using gas for cooking and heating.
Dual-powered tiny home appliances
If you’re traveling a lot, you should look for a refrigerator that is both gas and electric powered. Combo refrigerators are usually quite small and very expensive. The Smeta Propane Refrigerator with Freezer, shown here is electric and LPG 2 way powered. It’s 6.1 cubic feet which is huge for a combo powered fridge.
Tiny house gas range/oven
This free-standing 20″wide range in stainless steel with electronic ignition is only 19.5″ wide, but it weighs 97 lbs. It has four burners and a broiler. Can be converted to propane with included kit.
Buy it through this link for $896.00* (on 6/7/2023), free shipping, and 48 hr. delivery (so they say).
Buy it from The Home Depot for $1,177.64* but it could take two months to get. I’ve used that to get additional discounts and other concessions. Here’s how. They do offer financing, and you’d have a “brick & mortar” store to return it to if needed.
Buying an RV Range Oven from eBay may be a good option too
These ovens are 17″ wide and only about 16″ high. They weigh about 54 lbs. They usually have three burners and are made to be built into a cabinet, giving you space for storage below. eBay has cost-saving opportunities like factory surplus, salvaged units, and the ability to bid on items. However, you might not get a factory warranty or any kind of customer service.
Propane Stove Tip: Do not buy a propane stove with a “glo-bar” ignition system. They need and use a huge amount of electricity to light the burners. Look for appliances that use a simple 9-volt battery as the spark ignition. You can also just use a long-tipped lighter to light the burners.
Buy your tiny house kitchen appliances before building
I always recommend that you buy your appliances before beginning your build. Here’s why:
- You want your unit on-site to make accurate measurements of size and connections.
- Delivery, especially if you special order a sale item from a big box store, could take months to arrive.
- You can inspect for damage and proper operation, and not be pressed for time if you need to return it or get customer service.
- You have the opportunity to not use what you thought would be good and go a different way without having to redesign the entire kitchen on the fly.
Induction Cooktops Might Be a Better Choice Than Gas For You
Radiant induction cooktops are slightly more efficient than gas, with 90% of the heat generated actually cooking the food. Gas efficiency is about 50%. But induction cooktops require particular cookware. Pots and pans made from aluminum, copper, or glass, including Pyrex, will not work on their own. Induction cookware must be made of magnetic-based material such as cast iron or magnetic stainless steel.
People like gas stoves because you can adjust the heat immediately, and they give you an indication of the heat level just by looking at the flame. Induction heat changes just as fast, but there is no indication.
Compared to a propane cooktop
Gas stoves produce low levels of carbon monoxide and moisture from the combustion process. Induction cooktops do not. Induction cooktops cool faster, are easier to clean, and can double as a counter top when not in use. There is no flame and no risk of a gas leak. They do, however, require a large amount of electricity.
Portable Induction Cooktop
A portable induction cooktop might fit your cooking needs perfectly. These have the benefit of being able to be stored in a cabinet when not in use. You can also take them to your outdoor kitchen. These plug in to a standard 110 volt AC outlet.
This Duxtop 9620LS LCD Portable Double Induction Cooktop 1800W Digital Electric Countertop Burner Sensor Touch Stove measures 17.1″ x 25″ inches and weights under 15 lbs. It uses 1800 watts of power at most.
Squeezing a Lot Into a Tiny Space
If you’re fitting out a panel truck, van, or very tiny tiny home, you might want to consider an all-in-one combo kitchen unit.
Avanti makes several variations. This 36″ wide compact kitchen features an all-stainless steel top for easy cleaning and durability. Two electric coil burners are ready to make pots of soup, rice, pasta, or stir fry. The rear burner offers 500 watts of cooking power, while the front burner gives a more powerful heat at 900 watts. Below the sink and cooktop are a storage closet with one cabinet shelf, and a 2.2 cu./ft. refigerator-freezer with two adjustable/removable slide-out shelves, door bins for extra storage space, and a reversible door hinge to best accommodate your kitchen layout.
Add Some Style with RETRO Tiny House Kitchen Appliances
Add a distinctive look to your kitchen with this colorful 50’s style bottom freezer refrigerator. Watch out for overpriced brands that make you pay extra just because they’re this particular style.
The Unique Appliances Retro-Fridge (shown here) brings fun to space efficiency and is a configuration that just makes good sense. Bring the refrigerated space you use the most off the floor and easily accessible. At the same time, the freezer drawers reduce frost build up and improve energy efficiency. The 57 in. height will fit under virtually every overhead cabinet, and the range of retro and modern colors make an eye-catching statement.
LED lighting brightens up the interior that has loads of adaptability, and even has split-adjustable door shelves. This may look retro, but the mechanisms are modern Energy Star efficient. It sells for $899.00* at The Home Depot. But it is a special order, so you need to allow two months for delivery. It comes in seven colors.
