Favorite Tiny House of 2021

Here is a look at our favorite tiny house of 2021. It’s full of clever innovative design elements we just have to share.

“Traci and Matt were looking for opportunities to simplify their lives after the kids left home, so they decided to build a tiny house on wheels in their backyard and rent out their primary home.  No more mortgage! They’re both carpenters by trade. Matt led the framing, and Traci did everything else. The end result is a wonderfully customized tiny house with a downstairs bedroom, inventive closets, and bathroom access. ”

The tiny home is built on a 10′ wide trailer, which really lends an air of spaciousness.

Note: A 10′ tiny house is not impossible to move, as some would say. You do need to comply with wide-load regulations, but permits and moving costs are not prohibitive. See more about moving a wide tiny home on this page.

Salvage and Upcycling

A lot of the material, like the plywood, was salvaged from a commercial construction site. All of the doors, and all but one of the windows, were salvaged from other remodels.

Just because it was built as inexpensively as possible, using a lot of recovered materials, didn’t mean it couldn’t be fabulous.

Bedroom on Main Floor

The master bedroom is on the main floor for those of us who would rather not climb the stairs in the middle of the night.

Unique, Unobtrusive Staircase for the Loft

You can be looking right at it and not realize it’s the stairway. Not only does it keep a low profile, it  provides coveted storage space.

Credit Traci for welding together this clever and very stable staircase.

Slide-Out, Ducted, Built-in Range Hood

Favorite Tiny House

Another really cool item Traci included is this slide-out range hood. This is a great idea for those using narrower cabinets in the kitchen area.

At only 2″ high, it doesn’t become a design focal point of the kitchen, but rather fades into the cabinetry.

This built-in unit features a 3-speed electronic control panel, long-lasting LED lights, and dishwasher-safe aluminum mesh filters. The powerful independently tested 425 CFM motor will effectively remove smoke, moisture, and cooking aromas.

You would need to build in an external vent. See more about range hoods and venting on this page.

Also see the 32″ version of this retractable range hood in the widget section of this page.

Note the cool butcher block cutting board behind the stove. Traci made that to fit exactly over the stove for times she needs more counter space.

Pass-Through Window with Bar

This huge window gives the kitchen direct access to the deck area. There are matching live-edge bars with stools on each side.

Live edge wood can be hard to acquire. I’ve only run across a few places that keep it in stock. In my area, I would have to go directly to a saw mill and have them cut me a piece. This makes it expensive to use, but it’s so nice.

Unique and Amazing Triple Doors

favorite tiny house pocket doors
Absolutely the best bathroom door design we’ve ever seen.

There are three pocket doors that can be configured to allow the bathroom to be a private en-suite for the bedroom, but also allows the bathroom to be private from the bedroom and accessible from the living area without disturbing the occupants of the bedroom.

See the video at the bottom of the pages where Traci demonstrates how these are used. It’s at minute 14:46.

The doors are simply sheets of plywood, so the walls aren’t massively thick as with most pocket doors.

Composting Toilet

You can see the composting toilet in this image and the vent pipe extending up through the ceiling.

Composting toilets do make the plumbing somewhat easier because you aren’t dealing with a black tank waste. But, well…See more about composting toilets as well as my thoughts on this page.

Gold Metal, Hexagonal, Stick-on Backsplash

Notice the nice backsplash in the kitchen. You can see it best in the picture at the bottom of the page. It’s a Peel-N-Stick adhesive-backed installation. What makes it unique is the way she let some of the ends and top look jagged as a design characteristic, which real makes you look twice.

Peel-N-Stick tiles need a good surface behind them for the adhesive to adhere well. See this page on how to prepare the surface.

Custom-Made Tiny Kitchen Island on Wheels

Traci, being a finish carpenter by trade, designed and built the tiny moveable kitchen island you see in the photo below.
